Classic Apple Crisp Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6-7 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (prevents browning)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cornstarch (optional for a thicker filling)

For the Crisp Topping:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts (chopped, optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

2. Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice. Add the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cornstarch (if using). Mix until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.

3. Make the Crisp Topping: In another bowl, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the melted butter and mix with a fork until crumbly. Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts, if desired.

4. Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden brown.

5. Cool and Serve: Let the apple crisp cool for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
